Though German auto manufacturer Mercedes-Benz only began constructing what we think of today as SUVs since the 1990s, in that short period of time, the brand has risen to the top with its SUV sales.  In 201, Mercedes-Benz SUV sales rocketed 24 percent versus 2012 numbers. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, in particular, has been doing very well for itself for quite some time now. The fresh-faced Mercedes-Benz ML class also aided the brand on its rise to the top, but the Mercedes-R Class really lead the lineup this year, with sales increases of fifty percent.

Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes-Benz, talks about the brand's growth, stating, "With the launch of our first sport utility vehicle - the G-Class - more than 30 years ago, we entered a segment in which we are now very successful with a total of five models. The SUVs today are an important pillar of Mercedes-Benz's growth and have regularly posted a new sales record in every month since July 2010."¹ Over two million Mercedes-Benz SUVs were sold globally this year, with the majority of these sales taking place in China and North America.
